An Analysis of the Performance of the Fans of a Wind Tunnel at the Naval Postgraduate School.
Abstract
The large subsonic academic wind tunnel at NPS, powered by two counter-rotating fans, never achieved the design specifications. The reason for the poor performance of the tunnel was unknown but believed to be due to either poorly designed fan blades or to separation in the diffuser. Being easier to analyze, the fan blades were chosen for initial study. The approach used is a new blade element method for calculating the performance of high and intermediate solidity fans. Although this new method predicts some deviations from the original isolated blade analysis, it was found that the design was adequate and, therefore, the tunnel problem is most probably due to separation in the diffuser.
