Effects of Rifle Zero and Size of Shot Group on Marksmanship Scores

Abstract

This research sought to determine the relative contributions of two factors on marksmanship performance. One factor, shot group size, is an index of a soldier's ability to apply the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship (aiming, trigger squeeze, etc.). The other factor, rifle zero, is an index of how well a soldier can place his or her shot group in reference to an aiming point (e.g., center of a target). Our objective was to determine whether one of the factors was more responsible for poor marksmanship performance than the other. Keywords: Silhouette targets.
