Structural Chemistry of Energetic Compounds.

Abstract

Structural characterization of 16 energetic materials and precursors was performed by x-ray diffraction. The trinitro and tetranitro tetraazabicyclo (3.3.0) octanes examined, compounds D and E, are significantly more dense than had been predicted. The crystal structure analysis showed that the increase in density is due to intramolecular crowding rather than extraordinary packing efficiencies which were at normal values of 0.73 and 0.75 respectively. Keywords: Tetraazabicyclooctanes, Oxetane, Nitramines, Nitro-adamantane, Nitro radicals, Benzyl radicals, Tetrazoles, Cyclic compounds.
