Preliminary Design for Disposal of Dredged Material from Thimble Shoal Channel on West Ocean View Beaches, Norfolk, Virginia.

Abstract

This report recommends specific areas of Thimble Shoal Channel that contain sediment (sand) suitable for beach nourishment along West Ocean View beaches. The eroded beaches need a restricted amount of sand for most efficient use of the existing groins. Report suggests that well-planned measurements of tidal currents near the Ocean View shore would be helpful in assessing the importance of longshore transport by tidal flows. Also, bathymetry and topography within groin compartments must be known in order to determine what reserve storage capacity exists, and what dredged material volume will be suitable. Keywords: Coastal processes; Sediment characteristics; Design considerations for beach disposal; Marine stockpile.
