Threshold Wind Volocities for Raising Dust in the Western Sahara.

Abstract

Data from eight meteorological stations in the western Sahara for the period July 1 - August 15, 1974 indicate an average threshold wind velocity of about 8 m/s for raising dust. Station-to-Station variations in the threshold wind velocity are relatively large and range from 5 m/s to 12.5 m/s. However, at most stations the threshold velocity appears to be a reproducible characteristic of the environment. Threshold velocity variations appear to be attributable in part to differences in soil and terrain characteristics at the stations. (Author)
