Air Superiority and Airfield Attack - Lessons from History.

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to reconsider the lessons of history regarding air operations in general and airbase attack campaigns in particular. The central theme is air superiority and this is discussed through the mechanism of analyzing airbase attack campaigns. This report demonstrates both the value and difficulties of preplanning campaigns and makes the case that the planning of future combat options is an important contribution to success in war. Topics studied include: Operations of the Luftwaffe in support of the invasion of Poland, 1 September 1939; Operations against Great Britain, Summer 1940; Operation Bodenplatte, January 1, 1945; The Soviet experience; Airbase Attacks in Support of the Combined Bomber Offensive (Operation Pointblank); UN Forces in Korea 1950-1953; Airfield Attack in the Middle East Conflicts the Suez War (October-November 1956; The Six Day War, June 1967; and The Yom Kippur War, October 1973.
