Standard Methods for Ecological Surveys of Army Training Lands: Site Selection, Disturbance Index, Bird, and Mammal Data Collection.

Abstract

An extensive amount of field data is needed to prepare guidelines that are useful in maintaining training realism at U.S. Army installations having quite different ecologies. Modification and application of guild theory has reduced the amount of data that must be acquired, but standard methods would allow data gathered at all installations to be compatible. This report documents the development of standardized methods for conducting ecological studies on U.S. Army training lands. These methods are applicable to site selection, soil/vegetative disturbance indices, songbirds, and small mammals. The guidelines allow maximum flexibility in designing an individual study and also allow the user to obtain data for specific purposes. This flexibility also allows adaptation/modification for ecosystem variation and for local or site variations and irregularities. (Author)
