Remarks by General Duane H. Cassidy at AUSA Winter Defense Symposium,

Abstract

This speech by Gen Duane Cassidy is about the Air Force planning starting with the amazing accuracy of per World War II plans by Hop Arnold's staff. Plans were drawn up in 9 days predicting what groups needed to form, what industries need to increase production, how many bombers would be needed, but their airlift needs were very bad estimates. This letter problem still persists -- How much airlift is enough The speech includes a list of lessons learned about airlift and modern airlift examples of missions to Grenada, Operation Deep Freeze, Autumn Forge, etc. Gen. Cassidy gives airlift events and matches them with types of aircraft used, but emphasizes that airlift is a military system, not just an airplane. He also talks of the 'Window of Opportunity' - that timeframe in which a commander can best employ airlift. Air crew ratio, use of reserve forces, the global decision support system, command and control, and finally a push for bringing the c-17 into the Air Force inventory make up the remainder of the speech about the capabilities of the military airlift command.
