Translation and Interpreting Support for Army R&D Activities.

Abstract

This report describes the methodology, findings, and recommendations of a study of the requirements, resources, and procedures of the Army R&D Community for translations and interpreting of foreign language information of scientific and technical interest. The study is based on survey of R&D technical libraries and foreign intelligence offices and interviews with many officials responsible for information support, translating, and interpreting. The report includes descriptions of the translating and interpreting processes and the organizations that do this work. The major finding of the study is that Army R&D management should assure adequate use of foreign technology in support of Army R&D by incorporating policy and responsibilities for transfer of foreign technology to the Army into the Army Scientific and Technical Information Program. Keywords: Linguistics, Technology transfer.
