Cultural Resource Investigation of the Goose River Basin, North Dakota

Abstract

A preliminary records search and literature review of cultural resources indicates that few archaeological and historical sites have been reported and that few field investigations have been conducted by archaeologists and historians in this area. Only two archaeological sites and five archaeological site leads have been reported while six historic sites have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Despite the relative lack of records of cultural resources and the general paucity of literature on these resources, the areas appears to have considerable potential for an abundance of these resources. There are a number of Indian relic collectors and collections of artifacts in the area. The review of historical literature indicates that a wide variety of activities and events took place in this areas, and that there is considerable potential for locating early historic structures and conducting oral histories to document and supplement information gathered from literature and archival sources.
