Rail Inductance Calculations for Some Simple Current Distributions,

Abstract

In this study, an expression for the inductance per unit length of the rails for a rails for a railgun-type electromagnetic launcher (EML) is derived from first principles using simple quasi-stationary models for the current distribution in the rails. The results are applied in particular, to the MRL railgun and are compared with work by others in the field. The study concludes with discussions on the problems associated with current diffusion in the rails, and the resulting influence upon the equation-of-motion used in evaluating projectile performance. Keywords: Australis; Inductance; Electric guns; Railgun accelerators. (Author)
