Development of Instructor Support Feature Guidelines. Volume 1.

Abstract

This report documents the development of specification guidelines for aircrew training device (ATD) Instructor Support Features (ISFs). Thirteen advanced instructional systems and ATDs were analyzed for identification and definition of ISFs. Areas of analysis included: a comparison of ISF usage and effectiveness; an analysis of common tasks; and a system engineering analysis. Conclusions: (1) A comprehensive front-end analysis of both student training tasks and instructor requirements is required. (2) Instructor training in the use of ISFs is needed. (3) Instructional system data maneuvers and procedures, displays, and performance measurement criteria) must be kept current with changes in training requirements and flight procedures. (4) The instructional system should provide for level(s) of automated control that support the specific training objectives. (5) The automated Performance measurement feature should be designed as an aid, not as a replacement, to support the instructor in an evaluation of the student's performance of the training objective.
