Conceptual Design of a Synoptic Interplanetary Monitor Platform at L sub 1 (SIMPL).

Abstract

A conceptual design and feasibility study is described for a Synoptic Interplanetary Monitor Platform (SIMPL) to be located at the Earth-Sun interior libration point (L sub 1), about one million miles from earth. There, SIMPL's magnetometer, solar wind plasma instrument, particle instrument, and radio wave instrument will obtain data to provide the U. S. Air Force Air Weather Service with early warnings of solar-induced disruptions of the terrestrial environment. The data will be processed on-board into militarily useful forecast parameters and transmitted in real-time 24 hours/day to AWS stations worldwide. Keywords: Solar terrestrial libration point, Solar wind, and Libration point.
