Pavement Recycling: Facilities Technology Application Test (FTAT) Demonstration, FY 84, Fort Gillem, Georgia.
Abstract
The objective of this project was to demonstrate and document the use of pavement recycling techniques. Most Army engineers at the working level have read about recycling but are hesitant to use recycling procedures because they do not have 'hands on' experience. This pavement recycling demonstration was conducted at Fort Gillem, Ga., where both hot-mix and cold-mix recycling techniques were demonstrated. A four-lane asphalt concrete pavement road serving as the main entrance to Fort Gillem was selected to demonstrate the hot-mix recycling technique. This road had been overlaid several times leaving the surface approximately 2 in. above the PCC curb and gutter. This caused a safety hazard and would have rendered the existing curbs and gutters useless if another overlay was done. Therefore, 4 in. of the pavement was removed using the cold milling process and a 2-in. hot-recycled mix was put back so that the pavement surface tied into the original curb. A two-lane asphalt concrete pavement road serving as the truck entrance to Fort Gillem was chosen to demonstrate cold recycling. This road had extensive alligator cracking which indicated a need to strengthen the existing pavement structure. The pavement structure was pulverized, an additional binder was added as an emulsion, and the material was compacted using a vibrator steel wheel roller and a 15-ton rubber tired roller. This produced an excellent base upon which a hot-mix recycle asphalt concrete wearing surface will be added at a later date. Keywords: Asphalt pavement recycling, Cold milling, Cold-mix asphalt recycling, Emulsion, Hot-mix asphalt recycling.
