Printed Circuit Transmission Line Transitions

Abstract

Three types of printed circuit transmission lines were investigated experimentally: microstrip; stripline; and grounded coplanar waveguide. Formulas for characteristic impedance were verified by measurements of lines on low-dielectric-constant substrates. Several designs of transitions from coaxial cable to microstripline were tested. The best of these was a uniform microstripline with a flare at the connector end. A transition from coax into coplanar waveguide, and one from stripline into microstrip, had high reflection coefficients. Transitions from coax to stripline, and from coplanar waveguide to microstrip, had low reflection coefficients. Keywords include: Microstrip antennas; Conformal antennas; Transmission lines; and Printed circuit antennas.
