AGARD Flight Test Techniques Series. Volume 4. Determination of Antennae Patterns and Radar Reflection Characteristics of Aircraft

Abstract

Part I describes the different types of aircraft antennas, their radiation characteristics and their preferred siting on the airframe. Great emphasis is placed on the various methods for determining aircraft antenna radiation patterns (ARP) and advantages, disadvantages and limitations of each method are indicated. Mathematical modelling, model measurements and in-flight measurements in conjunction with the applied flight test technique are included. Examples of practical results are given. Part 2 describes methods of determining aircraft radar characteristics, indicating advantages, disadvantages and limitations of each method. Relevant fundamentals of radar theory are included only as necessary to appreciation of the real meaning of radar cross section (RCS) and angular glint. The measuring methods included are dynamic full-scale, static full-scale, sub-scale optical, ultrasonic and radio modelling. References are made to RCS measuring facilities in the USA and Europe and the UK Radio Modelling Facility is used extensively to exemplify the sub-scale technique.
