The 1984 Defense Budget - An Analysis.

Abstract

This analysis of the proposed FY84 Defense Budget begins with a comparison of the Defense Budget and the overall budget. It then compares the allocations for each service by Personnel, Forces, Procurement, RDT&E, Operation and Maintenance, and Military Construction and Family Housing. After brief overviews of the Navy and Air Force budgets, the paper concentrates on the proposed FY84 Army budget with emphasis on how it affects Manning and Force Structure, Modernization, Operations and Maintenance and Military Construction. This section concludes with detailed summaries of dollar and/or quantity allocations for the above categories. Numerous charts and graphs illustrate: Defense/Army Percentage of the Budget; Army, Navy, Air Force Percentages of the Budget; Defense, Non-Defense and Army Budget Trends; Cost of Maintaining the Army; Active and Reserve Force Structure Improvements; Reserve and National Guard Personnel Strengths; Force Structure and Distribution; Strategic Mobility; and Budget Adequacy.
