Light Forces in the Defense of Australia.

Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to examine light force developments and to analyse the potential for effective employment of light forces in the defense of Australia. The essay will identify the strengths and weaknesses of an army force structure based on light units and formations, ad compare their utility in an Australian context with more substantial options for force structure. The essay begins by attempting a broad and essentially philosophical view of the nature of war and the military ethos before looking at specific aspects of the Australian strategic outlook and the appropriate force structure for both the short and long term.
