Acceleration Processes in the Earth's Magnetosphere.

Abstract

Three main topics have been concentrated on in this study: (1) Acceleration of heavy ions on auroral field lines and in the ring current; (2) Kinetic and magnetohydrodynamic studies of reconnection processes in the earth's magnetosphere; and (3) The coupling of the magnetosphere and ionosphere via field aligned currents. Two reports are presented here: Driven Magnetic Reconnection in Three Dimensions: Energy Conversion and Field Aligned Current Generation; and Heating of Thermal Helium in the Equatorial Magnetosphere: A Simulation Study.
