Aerodynamic Breakup of Polymer Solutions via Digital Image Processing Techniques.

Abstract

The behavior of viscoelastic polymer solutions when exposed to high velocity airstream have been experimentally investigated. High speed pulsed laser photographic and digital image enhancement techniques have been used to visualize and characterize in-flight breakup of polymer solutions. Experiments with several polymer concentrations and various temperatures have been conducted in two facilities. The first set-up utilizes a high speed, free-jet flow and provides initial transient breakup behavior. Increased flight time for polymer relaxation was achieved by a unique co-flowing jet-facility developed for this task. Limited data obtained on this set-up are also presented.
