A Coherent Fused Silica Fiberoptic Array.

Abstract

Imagescopes greater than 10 meters in length are desirable for application in sighting and fire-control problems. However, conventional glasses do not transmit sufficient light for use in lengths greater than four or five meters. Fused silica optical fiber with a sufficiently low attenuation coefficient for transmitting over great lengths is available. The present work was undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of fabricating a large format coherent fiber bundle from fused silica.
