Accurate Determination of the Permittivity and Conductivity of Biological Tissue at Centimetre and Millimetre Wavelengths.

Abstract

An apparatus has been set up and a technique devised to determine the complex permittivity of solid biological tissue in the frequency range 1-18 GHz. The uncertainties in the measured values of permittivity and conductivity were 1% and 2% respectively. Comparative dielectric measurements performed on brain tissue and lens material showed that the latter had a much higher proportion of its water content affected by the presence of biological macromolecules.
