Design and Evaluation of NUSC's Flow Loop Facility.

Abstract

A unique Flow Loop Facility capable of providing steady state and user defined transient flows (e.g., constant or exponential acceleration) was designed and built. Transient capabilities include acceleration of the flow to velocities of 30 ft/sec under accelerations up to 20 ft/sec sq in circular test sections up to 6 inches in diameter. Provisions have been made for the future addition of larger test sections up to 12 inches in diameter with flows having accelerations up to 10 ft/ sec sq and velocities of 30 ft/sec. Tests showed that the entrance condition to a 2-inch-diameter test section had a velocity profile uniform within 1 percent and a maximum turbulence intensity of 1.31 percent.
