Tactile Stimulation as a Substitute for Vision for the Blind.

Abstract

In exploring the use of the tactile system as a channel for data input, we must ask three fundamental questions: 1) How much data can be transferred through the tactile system? 2) How much information is needed for specific tasks which would be of use to the blind, such as navigation in an unfamiliar environment, or locating and picking up objects? 3) What parameters of the vibratory tactile system and what form of signals and patterns presented to it are important in enabling the wearer of a VTA to obtain information about the environment from the data presented through the VTA?
