Digital Data Support for New Weapon Systems.
Abstract
A host of new weapon systems are being developed which will require some form of digital mapping, charting, and geodetic (MC&G) data for operation. Along with these new weapon systems are a diverse spectrum of combat support systems such as weapon system trainers, battle management systems, and intelligence analysis systems which will likewise need digital MC&G data. In some cases these systems are being designed to operate with data which the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) does not currently produce or plan to produce in the future. Also some of these digital MC&G data requirements are simply beyond the current technological capabilities of DMA to produce within the required time frame. The answer to this untenable situation is communication. It is essential that military system developers and DMA customers alike understand the nature of this situation. System developers are encouraged to design their systems to operate with data currently being produced. When this is not feasible, early communication with DMA is necessary because DMA requires the same lead time as any other developer to generate new production capabilities. This paper is part of the effort being made by DMA to establish the necessary communication links. Included in this paper are a brief overview of DMA's mission and products, a description of our digital data products, a discussion of the production challenges and schedules, a listing of current developing systems that we know about, and a summary of the DMA research and development efforts aimed at meeting future digital data requirements.
