1984 Survey of National Guard and Reserve Members. Description and Findings.
Abstract
The Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) conducted the Reserve Components survey at the request of the Offices of Reserve affairs; and Military Personnel and Force Management Personnel Administration and Services. The purpose of the survey was to provide information on the attitudes and experiences of selected Reserve members with regard to the military identification system. The key concerns were the attitudes and opinions of National Guard and Reserve members toward the color of their ID cards, their feelings about different colored cards, their overall satisfaction with reserve duty and their intention to continue service. DMDC collected data via a precoded questionnaire with input from both sponsering offices. A sample of 201 units was randomly drawn and included enlisted, officers, and warrants. A unit response rate of 91.5 percent was received. The report first examines some basic characteristics of the respondents such as grade and sex. The majority of the respondents were married, and had finished high school. There was generally a positive attitude toward experience in the Reserve. Opinions stated were that they felt their units were important to the community, they liked earning credit towards retirement, and they enjoyed serving their country. The training was perceived as not being too difficult nor was their any conflict with the civilian job. However, they believed there was a conflict with family activities and they were not treated as equals by the active force personnel. Keywords: RC (Reserve Components), warrant officers.
