Evaluation of Selected Computer Codes for Impact and Explosive Detonation Calculations,

Abstract

A study conducted to select computer codes for modelling self forging fragment formation and target impact is reported. The basic features of such codes are reviewed, and the application of numerical modelling techniques to self-forging fragment design is discussed. Eleven codes are included in the study, all of which are found to be adequate with respect to modelling equations of state, stress-strain and failure. In evaluating the codes, emphasis is placed on such features as documentation, three-dimensional capability and modelling of severe distortions. Based on these criteria, the EPIC-2 and EPIC-3 codes are selected as the codes which best fulfill the DRES numerical modelling requirements for self-forging fragment research.
