Receptiveness of Army Families in USAREUR to Incentives for Extension

Abstract

The cost of moving Army families into and out of USAREUR represents a major financial burden to the Army. Significant cost savings can be realized if the current families in USAREUR can be induced to extend their tours. This research assesses the relative effects of a range of financial and other incentives on the willingness of Army families to extend tours in USAREUR for 12 additional months. It also touches on some of the underlying reasons why families choose not to extend. Surveys were administered to more than 1,000 Army families, including both the service members and their spouses. The data obtained permit Army planners to determine the most cost-effective incentives for a desired extension rate. Data for enlistees, noncommissioned officers (NCOs), and officers are presented separately. Keywords: Adjustments, Tour extension.
