Abstract

This report describes the results of two workshops held for the purpose of determining the state of computing facilities in American departments of statistics, the degree of usage of computers in statistical research and to identify important directions for future research and the computing equipment needed to support this research. All U.S. departments were surveyed regarding their present facilities and future needs, and the results of this survey are included in the report. Based on this survey and the workshops, the panel has presented recommendations regarding future goals that are directed to statistics departments, university administrations, professional societies and research funding agencies.
