An Analysis of Diffraction Reduction by Use of a Lyot Stop.

Abstract

The efficiency of a Lyot stop in reducing diffraction effects in a simple optical system is analyzed. The transformation rules of Fourier optics are used to follow the optical signal through the system. This analysis reduces the problem to the evaluation of a two dimensional integral. An approximate analytic technique for evaluating this integral is presented. The final result is a formula for calculating the diffraction reduction efficiency of the Lyot stop. Keywords: Telescope; Fourier Optics.
