Historic Archeological Investigations of a Proposed Septic Drainage Field Associated with the Rehabilitation of The National Register of Historic Places, James A. Mangum House, Falls Lake, Wake County, North Carolina,
Abstract
An archeological survey was conducted at the site of a proposed septic system for the James Mangum House, a property which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wilmington District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers specified that the investigation was to consist of, the excavation of shovel tests and test units, and that the testing units, and that the testing was to be confined to a specific impact area. Excavation of 75 shovel tests and 4 test units resulted in the recovery of several historic and prehistoric artifacts from disturbed contexts. Although it is likely that the Mangum property does contain significant archeological deposits, the cultural remains encountered in the course of this survey do not appear to contribute to the significance of the property. It has therefore been recommended that the project be given clearance to proceed without the need for additional archeological investigation.
