Archaeological Test Excavations at CA-LAn-142, -152, -1144, -1144B and EBERHART-5 Palos Verdes Peninsula, Los Angeles, County, California.
Abstract
This report presents the results of an archaeological and paleontological study completed at White Point on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the City of Los Angeles, Calfornia. The investigation included: (1) a literature and records search; (2) subsurface testing and evaluation of archaeological sites CA-LAn-142,-152, -1144, -1144B, and Eberhart -5; and (3) a paleontological survey and evaluation. A major focus of the study was the evaluation of the historic and prehistoric aspects of the sites and the determination of their potential eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. Twenty-two 1 X1 m controlled test units and 15 shovel test pits (STPs) were excavated at the five sites. Both artifactual and ecofactual remains were examined with regards to research issues revelant to the Palos Verdes area. Based on results obtained from this investigation sites CA-LAn-142, -152, -1144, and -1144B constitute sufficiently intact cultural resources and are, therefore, eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. On the basis of integrity and research potential, Eberhart -5 is not considered as it is not likely to yield information important to local or regional research questions.
