Laboratory Techniques for Determining the Effects of Pyridostigmine Bromide.
Abstract
The USAF Surgeon General has approved pyridostigmine bromide (PB) pretreatment for flying personnel as of 21 March 86. However, specific side effects resulting from taking PB during high sustained + G sub z stress, altitude stress, and periods of potential spatial disorientation had not yet been fully investigated. The USAF school of Aerospace Medicine (UASFSAM), Crew Technology Division, was therefore tasked with this clinical research effort. For effective investigation of these potential problem areas, rapid and accurate methods have had to be established for determining the blood plasma PB levels and the resultant inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity. The basic purpose of this report is to describe in detail the analytical techniques used at USAFSAM to support the clinical research programs involving the physiological and performance aspects of USAF aircrews taking PB. Keywords: Analytical chemistry; Chemical defense; Pyridostigmine bromide as pre-exposure antidote.
