A General Framework for Modeling Production.

Abstract

This document introduces a general framework for developing and evaluating deterministic models of production processes. The authors evaluate familiar linear programming formulations, Manufacturing Resources Planning (MRP) and Critical Path Methods (CPM) in terms of the framework. Flaws are exposed in linear programming formulations incorporating lead times. Provided is a correct reformulation, as well as a more general formulation accommodating non-integer lead times and unequal-length planning periods. Redefining MRP and CPM illustrates the framework's use for comparing seemingly unrelated models and for rigorously explaining limitations in existing models a structured approach for the development of accurate models of production is proposed.
