A Molecular Mechanics Study of Monensin B Ion Selectivity.

Abstract

Recent results in our project on Topological Stereochemistry include the following. 1) The first experiments directed towards realization of the novel hook and ladder approach to the synthesis of molecular knots are in progress. The hook and ladder approach was first suggested by Lou Kauffman, a well known knot theorist working with Jon Simon under the math part of the ONR stereochemical topology project. 2) The 5-rung THYME diol-ditosylate has been successfully prepared, and cyclization experiments are in progress. If successful, this work will afford the first synthesis of a molecular trefoil knot, which will posses 100 atoms in the ring. 3) The first molecular mechanics studies on the THYME system have been accomplished. 4) Preliminary results obtained on collaboration with scientists in Lund, Sweden, indicate that the 3-rung Mobius ladder is resolved by chromatography on acetyl cellulose. 5) Work on the application of topology and graph theory to prediction of physical properties of certain topologically complex molecules such as the Mobius ladders is continuing.
