Two-Dimensional Water Quality Modeling of Old Hickory Lake.
Abstract
BETTER, a two-dimensional mathematical water quality model, was used to simulate water quality conditions in the main body of Old Hickory Lake, Tennessee and the outflows from Old Hickory Dam. A user's manual, which discusses the model's computational procedures, is included as an appendix. The report describes the preparation and sources of input data including reservoir and outlet geometry, meteorological conditions, model coefficients, and inflow quality and quantity. The report also outlines calibration, verification and sensitivity analyses. Four years, which ranged from (wet) to (dry) flow conditions, were simulated for the March-October period under actual conditions. Model predictions were compared to observed data. Additional simulations were performed to estimate the impacts of effluent from sewage treatment plants on the water quality of the lake. Knowledge gained from the application of the model is summarized and recommendations are made for future data collection and model studies. (Author)
