Native Language Ability and Trainability in English.
Abstract
The objectives of this research were to (1) determine if there is a correlation between native language ability and trainability in English, and (2) see if there were any gains made in the primary language ability as a result of studying a second language. A Spanish pre and post test was administered to Hispanic recruits enrolled in the Academic Remedial Training units of the three Recruit Training Commands at San Diego, California, Great Lakes, Illinois, and Orlando, Florida. Scores from the pre test were correlated with English gain scores derived from the Gates-MacGinite Reading Test and the English comprehension Level test as a measure of native language ability and trainability in English. The Spanish pre and post test scores were compared to determine if there were any gains made in primary language ability. The results suggest that there is a mild correlation between higher scores on a Spanish pre test and greater gains in English after a three to five week training program.
