Experimental Studies on the Dynamic Development and Control of Unsteady Separated Flows.
Abstract
It appears clear that substantial lift enhancement and stall delay are some of the beneficial consequences of certain unsteady aerodynamic conditions. Energetic vorticity dominated flows elicited through forced unsteady flow separation about a pitch airfoil were examined for a wide range of test conditions, including control oriented motion histories and model geometries. Phase locked high speed 16mm photography coupled with near surface hot wire anemometry and multi-port surface pressure measurements were used to quantify flowfield dynamics and the ensuing aerodynamic loading. The motion history employed as well as the model geometry had significant influences on the generation, coalescence and convection of the vortical structures. These studies suggest that certain aspects of unsteady separated flows and the resultant aerodynamic loading may be generated and controlled in a predictable and useful fashion. (Theses)
