Delamination Sensing and Modeling in Localized Impacts on Filament-Reinforced Laminated Plates.

Abstract

In this analytical and experimental investigation on graphite/epoxy and Kevlar/epoxy laminates, ultrasonic C-scan and X-Ray methods were used to determine delaminated areas, which were correlated with impactor-imparted kinetic energy. Transient flexural waves were studied. Residual strength and stiffness after impact at subperforation speeds were measured by three-point bend tests and correlated with the imparted kinetic energy. Since most of the results have been published, only brief summaries are given in this report along with references to the publications and a brief related bibliography. Keywords: Composite materials; Fiber reinforced composites, Impact damage; Laminated plates; Delamination; Residual strength and stiffness.
