Environment Extensibility.
Abstract
This report presents the results of a project funded under Contract N00014-85-C-0283, sponsored by the Software Technology for Adaptable, Reliable Systems (STARS) Program through the Office of Naval Research. The project was initially conceived as a study of environment extensibility in support of the STARS Program's activities in the area of software environments. Because of numerous changes in the Directorship, organization and content of the STARS Program, the project focussed more narrowly on the development of general approaches to evolutionary extension of software environments and the methods they support. The changes which led to narrowing the project's focus are chronicled in this document, followed by a discussion of the issue of extensibility-in-the-large, upon which the project focussed, and a statement of the project's focus. This followed by a synopsis of the results which are discussed in detail in the material appearing in Appendices A and B. The report ends with a brief summary. The project was originally proposed, in November 1984, to support the STARS Program's need to produce highly extensible automated software environments. The STARS Program had decided that automated software environments would be the primary vehicle for consolidating and delivering software development and maintenance technology to its target community.
