Flexible Object Inheritance.

Abstract

Inheritance of characteristics has wide applicability in disciplines such as biology and chemistry. In computer science, it has received attention in various fields.: ISA hierarchies in artificial intelligence, type/class inheritance in object-oriented languages such as LOOPS (BS) and Smalltalk (GR), and generalization or specialization in database methodologies such as the Semantic Data Model (HM). In representing the real world, this aspect of information is very important, for it allows data bases and programming languages to more closely model our understanding of the world. This paper will detail some mechanisms which may be used to accomplish this goal, a mathematical model developed to describe the problem, the solution implemented by the author, and some shortcomings of this solution and areas for improvement.
