Considerations in the Design of CCS Networks for CCITT Signaling System Number 7.

Abstract

This project addresses the concepts, the evolution, and the implementation of common channel signaling systems in current telecommunications networks within the United States. A generic simulation model for performance evaluation of potential network designs, using CCITT Signalling System no. 7, is presented with recommendations for possible future design use. This paper describes existing common channel signaling systems in detail. CCITT Signaling System no. 6 and no. 7 are explained at the packet level with emphasis on system operation. U.S. signaling system variations and rationale are examined along with implementation strategies. The move toward Integrated Services Digital Networks is present in terms of economic, interface, and standards issues. Proposed common channel signaling system architectures in support of ISDNs are outlined, with some discussion of field trials and their expected benefits.
