Optical Limiters Based on the Photorefractive Effect.

Abstract

During the course of this research, the working environment at ORTEL made it possible for another important line of research to develop: photorefractive self pumped phase conjugation of the near infrared radiation of GaA1As lasers near 850nm. The results of that research are included in this report. Real time holography with the photorefractive effect results in the coupling of the two writing beams together through the hologram such that one beam - image or reference - is amplified at the expense of the other. This amplification/deamplification effect may be used to build optical oscillators, many of which are self-pumped phase conjugate mirrors. The primary aim of this study was to attempt to optimize these effects with a view towards applying the deamplification effect in optical limiting.
