Polydiacetylene Single Crystal Fibres and their Use in Fibre-Reinforced Composites.

Abstract

This project was concerned with the development of high modulus for use in fibre-reinforced composites. It is shown that theoretical calculations indicated that polydiacetylene single crystal fibres may have values of Young's moduli of up to 200GPa. An attempt was made to prepare good crystals of the derivative 1-hydroxy-hexa-2,4-diyne which should have a modulus of the order of 177GPa. Unfortunately it was not possible to prepare good single crystals of this derivative. All fibres prepared were only partly crystalline and contained some unpolymerised material. The crystals were so fragile that good mechanical property data could not be obtained.
