Initial Investigation of Modified Bitumen Roofing Systems for Use in Military Construction.

Abstract

Modified bitumen roofing was investigated as part of ongoing research into alternative roofing systems for military construction. Literature and manufacturers' information were reviewed and field applications observed to identify properties, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of modified bitumen roofing systems. A modified bitumen membrane can be applied over most roof assemblies. Many different application methods can be used. The membrane can perform as a vapor retarder in some applications and is self-finishing. It requires careful surface preparation and cold weather specifications. Although test methods and performance criteria have been developed, industry-wide manufacturing standards have not. There is very little uniformity in either the product or its properties.
