Lead Pull-Down Problems and Possible Solutions, Contact Systems CS-400B Component Locator System.

Abstract

Operator-assist component locator machines, like the Contact Systems CS-400B, are being used more and more. Very strict process controls- and a thorough understanding of all the parameters that are involved-can be implemented to the users' advantage. Although many users are having problems with cut and clinches causing bowed leads, and therefore solder in the bend radius, there are countermeasures. Different forms of lead bends can be used and are the ideal way to counteract this problem. However, this is not always possible with existing board designs. Producibility limitations must be considered when a circuit board is still in the design stage. The machine parameters, that can be changed to minimize the problem, must be examined carefully because of the trade-offs involved with each remedy.
