Environmental and Water Quality Operational Studies: Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Sulfide and Reduced Metals in the Tailwater of Narrows Dam (Lake Greeson), Arkansas

Abstract

Water quality problems in tailwater areas are frequently related to water quality conditions in the reservoir. Of particular concern are elevated concentrations of sulfide and reduced metals, such as iron and manganese. Field investigations at Narrows Dam (Lake Greeson), located on the Little Missouri River in southwest Arkansas, document temporal and spatial patterns in the distribution of sulfide and reduced metals within and below a hydropower reservoir. Laboratory experiments involving reaeration of anoxic hypolimnetic waters were conducted to evaluate factors influencing the oxidation of various reduced metals. These results are compared with field observations.
