Optical Analog and Hybrid Computer Solution of Partial Differential Equations.

Abstract

The research program at UCSD on hybrid optical-electronic computing systems can be divided into two main areas of optical information processing: optical-analog/electronic-digital hybrids and optical-digital/electronic-digital hybrids. The optical-analog/electronic-digital hybrid is an analog optical processor with input/output interface to a microcomputer. One of the two optical processors under investigation at UCSD is a coded-phase optical correlator, which is employed for optical data reduction with posterior decision making by a microcomputer. The optical-digital/electronic-digital hybrids employ either optical parallel logic or integrated optical logic devices. Optical parallel logic memory devices are designed to perform digital optical computing under electronic microprocessor control.
