Global Low Orbit Message Relay (GLOMR) Satellite Applications Development Program.

Abstract

The Global Low Orbit Message Relay (GLOMR) satellite is a proof of concept effort. The spacecraft was taken into orbit by this Space Shuttle, Challenger, in late October 1985 and successfully ejected into a circular orbit of 324km. The primary goals of the Applications Development program were: (1) to develop a full understanding of GLOMR's capabilities; (2) to demonstrate their potential for application to a variety of U.S. Government missions; and (3) to develop a potential user base for future low cost message relay and geopositioning satellites. A successful series of tests and demonstrations with interested user/customers was conducted, with the results meeting the goals and objectives of the program. The final success is shown by the knowledge that the user community is presently planning and budgeting for follow on spacecraft and systems. Keywords: Satellite Communications.
