The Relationship between Reenlistment Intentions and Reserve Participation within the Armed Forces.

Abstract

This thesis investigates the military affiliation intentions of enlisted personnel in all four branches of service in their first or second term with less than a year remaining of their present active duty obligation. The investigation is done in two sequences: (1) reenlist/does not reenlist ('stayers' vs 'leavers'), and for those who plan to leave; (2) join the reserves/do not join the reserves ('reservists' vs 'civilians'); using the demographic, tenure, cognitive/affective, economic, and employment alternative variables as explaining factors. The analysis is done by using the Probit probability model which calculates the probabilities of each individual to reenlist/join the reserves, given specific characteristics. The results show that the explanatory effect using the groups of variables mentioned above, is higher for the reenlistment decisions than for the reserves decisions.
